SOLAR POWERED DESALINATION PLANT

SOLAR POWERED DESALINATION PLANT

small desalination plant being developed by researchers at MIT and in Korea could lead to small, portable desalination units that could be powered by solar cells or batteries and could deliver enough fresh water to supply the needs of a family or small village. As an added bonus, the system would also remove many contaminants, viruses and bacteria at the same time.

The new approach, called ion concentration polarization, is described in a paper by Postdoctoral Associate Sung Jae Kim and Associate Professor Jongyoon Han, both in MIT's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and colleagues in Korea.

The system works at a microscopic scale, using fabrication methods developed for microfluidics devices — similar to the manufacture of microchips, but using materials such as silicone (synthetic rubber). Each individual device would only process minute amounts of water, but a large number of them — the researchers envision an array with 1,600 units fabricated on an 8-inch-diameter wafer — could produce about 15 liters of water per hour, enough to provide drinking water for several people. The whole unit could be self-contained and driven by gravity — salt water would be poured in at the top, and fresh water and concentrated brine collected from two outlets at the bottom.

Electricity from POO POO

Electricity from POO POO

Bangalore: Manoj Mandelia, a 23-years old student from IIT-Kharagpur, has created a method to produce electricity from sewage water. "I developed a product which uses the concept of microbial fuel cell, a bio-electrochemical system that drives current by mimicking bacterial interactions found in nature," said Mandelia, reports Bharat Ghai from TopNews.in.

NOW READ THE COMMENTS:

we can make factory to make the bactria. We will produce garbage, we are expert in it. then from the garbage we wil make electrcity.

If one poo poo can lite a tourchlight fo 10 minuts. power problem of the earth is solved.

It is time we give him some award. This invention has changed the course of histry. All our power cricis is over for ever. the planet is saved.

If we can make great scientist Dr. Abdul Kalak, president , why not Manoj? It will be great to have president Manoj.

I wonder why the he is not yet in all media? all TV programs? he should be, we all want to know what this great scientist has to say.

The cost per unit cost in producing electricity is 280 rs. aprox electricity bill will be 8500/- per month.

but to save the planet we all should give up our money.

Thanks manoj, for giving oppertunity to sacrifice for the nation.

Another idea copied from West and passed on as "INNOVATION" by IITans...please stop these stunts...

- this idea has been there since 1900's and if you see above link you can see that in 2007 University of Queensland demonstrated this technique.

You can read the interesting article in the April 2004 issue of Environmental Science and Technology (volume 38, number 7, pages 2281-2285).

And another link from National Geographic

In my town some body attempted to utilise sewaage water from Minicipality to run a turbine and get electricity from the discarded small plane generators. Th3e project was not successful. More than technology other social factors such as collection of sewage water and sustained supply of sewage water have to be considered. Novel ideas appear sensational. One can say it is possible to generate enormous amount of electricity from Lightning. Can it be done. I am not discouraging Mr. Manoj. Everyday in the news some innovation from IITians or others appear. If all the innovations were implemented India would have been on top in the world. Mere enthusiasm is not enough but it has to be supported by entrepreneurship.

Approaching a VC? Here is a checklist

Approaching a VC? Here is a checklist
By   Sikta Samantaray
Bangalore: Seeing the growth of Indian software market, Ravi Varma started its own software venture in 2005, but could not go long and had to shut company's door in 2007, as he failed to raise fund from venture capitalists (VCs).

Currently working as a Vice President - Strategy in an IT firm, Varma graduated from IIM, Bangalore in 2004. After running the business for two years without any financial support, Ravi thought that his company had all the right credentials needed by venture capitalists, but when he pitched his ideas to around 10 VCs, he realized that his idea is premature and can not be funded by any venture firm.

Not only Varma, there are several such start-up entrepreneurs, who are in a race to raise VC funding. So, to help these emerging entrepreneurs, SiliconIndia talked to some of the VCs to know the important factors that can help these entrepreneurs to improve their chances of getting funded. Here are some important thoughts being given by VCs:

Do you have a Team to lead?

A company may have a big business idea, but working individually may not help it to achieve the objective. It is the team which may help one's idea to convert into a profitable product or service. Anurakt Jain, Analyst, Draper Fisher Jurvetson India said, "VCs invest in a team, so sell the team. A start-up should know well about their team members before pitching to VCs."

Pitch

The process of raising fund can be one of the more physically and emotionally draining parts of starting a business. It can go on for weeks or months, taking away focus from business. As an entrepreneur seeking funding, one need to demonstrate that he/she is very clear about his/her idea and how he/she would build an economically viable business around it. Rajesh Vakil, Head, Siemens Venture Capital, India said, "Put together a good investor presentation that covers all aspects of the business plan. A weak presentation can put off VCs easily." Speaking on the similar lines, Jain said, "The first 5-10 minutes of pitch to VCs are very crucial - get VCs on the hook. Describe the company in one-two lines - that would be helpful in running the business as well."

What is your USP?

While explaining about the product or service, a company need to avoid using jargon and adjectives. VCs say that startups should explain the product or service in simple language and emphasize its competitive edge or USP. Manav Sethi, COO BigMaps said, "The basic objective of a start-up should be to show that there is a need of this product or service in the market."

Business Plan

For any start-up, the purpose of presenting a business plan should be to show the potential to investors that if they invest in its business. Vakil said that a business plan must have a very effective executive summary, and in that summary a company should highlight the market, the product or service, management team, stage of the startup, location, market, market size, business, business model, capital structure, capital required and exit options. He also asked these startups to critically evaluate the business plan and do a market opportunity analysis to determine scalability of business. "Ask honestly "Will you fund this if it was someone else's business plan," added he.

Customer Base

Before presenting to VCs, a company needs to evaluate the customer business case, benefits and payback. Also, it needs to know in details about its existing customers as well as its potential customers. Any company can?t have any better evidence than customers to prove its claims about the marketability of its product/service.

A company needs to understand that it is in the market to sell a product, its business idea, which can't be sold unless its customers are satisfied with the product, which they plan to buy. Raghu Batta, Partner, Ojas Ventures said that startups should always make something or sell a service that people want.

What is the plan for interceptor drains at Delhi

What is the plan for interceptor drains at Delhi. It is basically ,

1. laying of parallel drains along three main drains --Najafgarh, Shahdara and supplementary drain
2. the interceptor drains will intercept the outflow of all small drains before they meet these main three drains.
3. the interceptor drains will carry the sewage to STPs
4.From the STPs, treated waste water will be released to these three main drains --Najafgarh, Shahdara and supplementary drain
5. From these main drains, the treated waste water will go to the river Yamuna as it is flowing today.

70% of the small drains will be intercepted and 85% of the total generated sewage of Delhi will be treated in this way.

I helped one of my associates in chennai in an internatioal tender last year . I feel that the method of  treating waste water before it reaches yamuna should be like this. If you notice in the tender, there is just one interception at the end of the main drain before it meets the river.

In our case, the treated sewage from the STPs will be released to the main drains again where it will get mixed with untreated sewage from small drains that are not intercepted ( 30%) .This is the major flaw of the present scheme.

I was searching for this Manila tender for a long time to give it to you. This morning at 6 o clock, while searching through my old files I came across this file suddenly. Lets hope it will help you. I believe in Destiny. Everything is destined to be get done at an appropriate FIXED time.

There is a flaw in the manila tender also. In a highly centralised system, we cant recycle the whole load as it will require another network of pipes to carry the treated waste water back into the city.Do you think its feasible in Delhi?

I know from our very first meeting whats going on in your mind. You are interested in treatment of waste water at the source itself before it reaches even the interceptor drains. What you are thinking of is a network of decentralised very very small STPs all around Delhi managed by local communities. And its easy to recycle some parts of treated waste water from these small STPs at the community level .

Are there any new thoughts ? As you travel a lot outside India, maybe you are having more ideas.

Homeopathic remedy-Frozen shoulder with wasting of the deltoid muscle

Frozen shoulder with wasting of the deltoid muscle (Adhesive capsulitis, Periarthritis)

My Mother is suffering from it.

It is also known as 50 shoulder in alternative medicine in Asia because its victims are usually people around the age of 50. It affects more women than man .

Frozen shoulder syndrome is considered to be the end-point for other shoulder problems – yet it is an enigma! It seems to occur mainly in women as they enter the menopause prompting some authorities to suggest a 'hormonal' component.

Frozen shoulder is characterized by pain and loss of motion or stiffness in the shoulder. The recovery is very slow.

• Exact cause is unknown.

Frozen shoulder, medically referred to as adhesive capsulitis, is a disorder in which the shoulder capsule, the connective tissue surrounding the gleno-humeral joint of the shoulder, becomes inflamed and stiff, and grows together with abnormal bands of tissue, called adhesions, greatly restricting motion and causing chronic pain.

Movement of the shoulder is severely restricted. Pain is usually constant, worse at night, when the weather is colder. This condition can last from five months to three years or more and is thought in some cases to be caused by injury or trauma to the area. It is believed that it may have an autoimmune component, with the body attacking healthy tissue in the shoulder. The condition may also cause chronic inflammation. Adhesions grow between the joints and tissue, greatly restricting motion and causing a number of painful complications. There is also a lack of fluid in the joint, further restricting movement.

GENERAL MANAGEMENT of Frozen Shoulder

• Rest to joint during acute stage.

• Provide sling.

• Mild passive shoulder exercises.

Exercise is a very important part of the treatment. Exercises will help break up the scar tissue in the shoulder and should be done twice a day. The doctor or physical therapist will show the patient what kind of exercises should be performed. Since the exercises may be painful, using ice packs afterwards may help. With all exercises, the patient should warm up before attempting to do them.

Frozen shoulder treatment mostly involves physiotherapy. Some dietary supplements and pain management methods are also helpful in dealing with a frozen shoulder. Do some mild physiotherapy exercises every day so that the shoulder muscles do not become stiffer. Initially, the physiotherapy exercises may seem to increase the pain, but you should continue to exercise so that the range of shoulder movements does not get restricted. For suitable physiotherapy exercises to treat frozen shoulder you can get in touch with a physiotherapist. Besides physiotherapy you should also get a massage to relieve the pain. You can use warm body oil to get a message. However, it is best if someone can give you the massage rather than you doing the massage yourself. An aromatherapy massage will be better as it has therapeutic effects as well. You can also manage the pain by using heat and cold therapy on the shoulder. Take a heating pad and press it upon the shoulder muscles to warm up and relax the muscles. Thereafter, take an ice pack and press it upon the shoulder. Alternate heat and cold treatment can significantly relieve the pain in your shoulder. Another good method would be to use a water pillow to support your shoulder while sleeping. If the pain becomes unbearable and does not let you sleep at night, you may also take some NSAID medications, which are also commonly known as over the counter painkillers. If the frozen shoulder is not showing any sign of improvement you may need to undergo special medical treatment like surgery, electric stimulation, or corticosteroid injections. You will need to consult your doctor before undergoing these treatments.

Successful treatment of adhesive capsulitis include:

Anti-inflammatory drugs

Cortisone injections to the shoulder

Physical therapy

Anti-inflammatory drugs and cortisone injections reduce the inflammation of the shoulder allowing the shoulder to be more easily stretched. Physical therapy is essential because it helps regain the range of motion in the shoulder.

Treatment can be a long process. Initial treatment is aimed at reducing inflammation and pain and increasing the range of motion of the shoulder.

Homeopathic Treatment for Frozen Shoulder

Homeopathy treats the person as a whole. It means that homeopathic treatment focuses on the patient as a person, as well as his pathological condition. The homeopathic medicines are selected after a full individualizing examination and case-analysis, which includes the medical history of the patient, physical and mental constitution etc. A miasmatic tendency (predisposition/susceptibility) is also often taken into account for the treatment of chronic conditions. The medicines given below indicate the therapeutic affinity but this is not a complete and definite guide to the treatment of this condition. The symptoms listed against each medicine may not be directly related to this disease because in homeopathy general symptoms and constitutional indications are also taken into account for selecting a remedy. To study any of the following remedies in more detail, please visit our Materia Medica section. None of these medicines should be taken without professional advice.

Homeopathic Remedies : Case Studies

Two tested remedies Rhus Tox 30C and the Causticum 30C

Doctor: For frozen shoulder , the left shoulder and left hand affected , start with Causticum-30 thrice a day for a week

Patient: Taken Causticum-30 for frozen shoulder as advised by you for one week , he is also taking PHYSIOTHERAPY. Now he is feeling 10%-15% improvement in his pain and the range of hand and shoulder movements has also increased 10% - 15%. Please advice further medication.

Doctor: Please continue physothreropy and this week take Rhustox-30 (thrice a day 3 drops per dose )and stop causticum30C. and report after a week the changes.

Patient : No further improvement in pain and stiffness even after continuing the Rhustox-30 for two weeks. My father's total improvement is still around 40%.

now

Dr.Mahfooz: Please give him Rhust-200 once a day after every 4 days and he will be insha Allah alright. Report after two weeks. Continue physiotherapy.

Frozen Shoulder - pain relief

Frozen Shoulder - pain relief

disclaimer - I have no specialised medical knowledge

frozen shoulder - a simple pain-free solution

Stand a couple of feet away from the corner of a table, facing the table with legs slightly more than shoulder width apart. Put the hand of your 'good arm' on the corner of the table and lean forward so it supports your body weight, and so that the hand of your 'bad' arm (the one with the frozen shoulder) is hanging down. Let your bad arm just hang there. Do NOT swing your bad arm. GENTLY rotate your hips and upper body in a circular motion, similar to hula hooping in slow motion. (see Fig 1) You will notice that your hanging arm also rotates very gently in the same direction. Allow your hanging arm to move naturally. After a few rotations (between 10 and 20) pause for a few seconds, then rotate the hips and body in the opposite direction a similar number of times.

That's it!

If the above exercise is very painful, or increases your pain, STOP immediately. It isn't working for you. If the exercise doesn't increase your pain, try repeating it after 15 minutes. If you find it relieves the pain, then the next time your shoulder is painful repeat the exercise. After doing the exercise a few times try doubling the number of rotations to see if this increases the period of relief.

I had frozen shoulder (known medically as Adhesive Capsulitis) and went to various medical specialists without success. One of them gave me exercises which were very painful and if anything seemed to make it worse. I searched the net and found a large number of treatments and therapies suggested, including surgery, drugs, diet, yoga, acupuncture, massage, deep manipulation, trigger therapy, heat treatment, lotions, and a variety of exercises. Many of them claimed that if the suggested remedy was followed exactly the condition would be cured within a couple of years.

I was confused and disappointed. Then I found a page* which stated very bluntly that in the majority of cases frozen shoulder sorts itself out in 18 months to 2 years regardless of the treatment used, and that many of the treatments, including painful exercises, can make the condition worse. It suggested the above method as a way of relieving the pain. I tried it and it worked. Not only did it relieve the pain, but within a month my shoulder was noticeably freer, and within a couple of months it was near enough back to normal.

Searching the web brings up thousands of pages on "frozen shoulder" but this particular pain relief treatment is hard to find, which is a pity because I found it very effective, and it doesn't rely on expensive consultations and treatments.

* The original page is no longer online. There is also an article which gives a more technical account of this exercise in the September 2000 issue of "The Physician and Sportsmedicine" (Vol 28, No 9), but it is only available on subscription.

Twitter search functionality.

One of the areas in which Twitter is lacking is search functionality. The Twitter search feature for friends and colleagues leaves a lot to be desired. Luckily, several application have stepped up to the task. Two oldies but goodies areTwitterSearch and Twitterverse. TwitterSearch is a great way to find people by name if you don't know their Twitter handle or have them in your email address book. Twitterverse is an addicting application combining Twitter search and maps showing Tweets from Twitter users around the world. TwitterSearch is the better application for search, but Twitterverse is an excellent way to kill an hour watching the mundane details of people's lives flash across the screen.

Some other up and coming Twitter search applications include TwitterTroll, an app that lets you search within the actual Tweets to find people who share common interests. TweetScan is another application that searches Twitter, this one by topic of interest. If you are voting for Ron Paul, for example, and you want to see what other Twitter users have to say about him, TweetScan will sift through the thousands of Tweets looking for comments about Ron Paul (or any other topic of your choosing). TweetScan seems to work best with shorter search queries.

Tips for young entrepreneurs

  •      Next
    Abhishek Mande

As part of our International Women's Day celebrations, we speak with young women who are making a difference to the society we live in. Here Shweta Mangal of Dial 1298 for Ambulance tells Abhishek Mande why she quit her job and decided to start an ambulance service.

  • Very often people wait for 'the right time' to implement their ideas. The key is not to wait. If there is an idea you believe in go ahead. There will never be a perfect time.
  • It is good to take people along with you on your journey. Take the help of friends who believe in your project and you. Hire professionals who are willing to join you. Build a team that you can fall back on and bounce ideas off.
  • Be patient and persistent. The first two or three years are the most crucial in starting a business and very often the time when most businesses fail. This happens not because the idea was not great but rather because the person whose idea it was stopped believing in it.
  • Be passionate about your idea and have the right attitude. You can be as intelligent as they come but without any passion you won't go far.
  • Don't get emotionally attached to your business. Surround yourself with the right people. Professionalise your outfit at the earliest instance. Remember you cannot multi-task beyond a point. Let go and let go to the right people.

Utilisation of Slaughter House Waste for the Preparation of Animal Feed

Summary  : India ranks topmost in the world in livestock holding and has the potential to utilize slaughterhouse by products to partly meet the growing requirement of animal feeds. The total availability of offal/bones in the country generated from large slaughterhouses is estimated to be more than 21-lakh tonnes/annum. Besides other uses, it can also be used for the preparation of animal feeds. The total requirement of animal feed has been estimated at 37 million tonnes. This includes 24 million tonnes of cattle feed (which as per the directive of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Govt. of India cannot have slaughter house waste material). Slaughterhouse waste material has the potential to partly replace 13 million tonnes of animal feed material. Slaughterhouse wastes can be used as inputs to feeds for the poultry, fi8sh and pets like dogs and cats. Presently in India, live stock feed production is more of cereal based and less of animal by-product based. This results in livestock, especially poultry, pig and fish competing with humans for grains and cereals which can easily be replaced with slaughterhouse waste. Slaughterhouse waste is first converted into intermediate products like Meat Bone Meal (MBM), Di0calciumphosphate (DCP) & bicalphos (BCP) which are essentially feed supplements. They are then mixed with various crop ingredients to make a complete feed for animals. Meat Bone Meal is a protein is a protein and phosphorous supplements for animal feed manufacturers. It is used upto 5% of total feed. DCP and BCP are essentially phosphorous supplements for animal feed manufacturers and are used to the extent of 1% of total feed. Currently total production of MBM in India is around 55200 tonnes/annum and total estimated demand is 77500 tonnes/annum. So the gap between production and supply of MBM is around 22300 tonnes/annum. Leading manufacturers of MBM in India are Standard Agro Vet (P) Ltd., Allanasons Ltd., Hind Agro Ltd., Al Kabeer, Hyderabad. Similarly the total production of DCP in India is a around 27600 tonnes/annum and total demand is 34800 tonnes/annum. Therefore the gap between production and demand of DCP is approximately 7200 tonnes/annum. Leading manufacturers of DCP in India are Hind Nihon Ind. Ltd., Muradnagar, Punjab Bone Meal, Jullundar, Kerala Chemical & Proteins Ltd., Cochin & Shaw Wallance Ltd, Jabalpur.  The report gives an overview of the different technologies available in India & abroad for utilization of slaughterhouse waste. The technologies, categorized broadly into Open kettle rendering, wet rendering and dry rendering, are simple in nature. The processes involved are basically pre breaking, cooking, sterilization, fat removal, drying and finally milling and bagging. The broad parameters of technology of wet and dry rendering are mentioned. In India Open Kettle rendering is followed, which is less efficient. The equipments are required for mobile wet rendering plants are detailed. The report also describes mobile plants, which may be more suitable to India's requirement, as we have low capacity slaughterhouses scattered in different places. Currently the vast gap between demand and supply of intermediate products like MBM, DCP, BCP etc. is being met by use of substitutes like Soya meal, Meat meal and Fishmeal. There is a vast potential for setting up slaughterhouse waste processing plants for manufacture of MBM/BCP ad feed supplement. The report on \"Utilization of Slaughterhouse Waste Material for the Preparation of Animal Feed\" highlights all the above issues and is an ideal guide to entrepreneurs & industries who are interested in setting up plants for utilization of slaughterhouse waste.

New Possibilities in ETP Sludge Handling and Disposal Methods

New Possibilities in ETP Sludge Handling and Disposal Methods

By Umesh Kulkari

Cost of sludge treatment and disposal is about half of the total cost of wastewater and sludge treatment and disposal cost. Hence it needs expert attention.

Only few years ago, dewatering ETP sludges to below 20% dry solids content seemed to be impossible. But with the recent advancements, it is possible to get solids as dry as 35 to 40% dry solids.

ETP sludge in any form is hazardous. The hazard is probably proportional to the square of the water content it has at the outlet point. Type of the industry producing the sludge is also very important in deciding the hazard. For example, bio sludge produced from pharma, pesticide and fertilizer industrial segment is far hazardous than municipal bio sludge. Water content in the sludge depends primarily on nature of sludge itself. It also depends upon the practices and equipments used for the purpose. Sludge, broadly is classified as biological or chemical. With the rapid industrialisation the classification ceases to be so simple. Further with global warming outcry becoming shriller by every passing day, it becomes even more important to have a holistic approach.

Many of the pollution issues, which may seem insurmountable, can in fact be solved with will, holistic and focused approach.

Changing the process, using alternative biodegradable chemicals, waste minimisation audits, etc., are some of the tools to ultimately bring about a qualitative difference in the pollution scenario. However my focus through this article is ETP sludge dewatering. I will cover dewatering techniques and final disposal methodologies including incineration.

The main objectives of sludge dewatering are:

  • To avoid human contact with the sludge to the maximum possible extent
  • To produce sludge suitable for disposal
  • For easier sludge handling
  • To reduce trucking cost
  • To reduce incineration cost where applicable
  • To reduce cost of bulking agent in composting where applicable
  • To reduce leachate production at land fill site
  • To reduce litigation costs
  • To carry out these processes without causing nuisance or offence

Following are some of techniques used for sludge dewatering

  • Sludge drying beds
  • Filter presses
  • Centrifuges
  • Vacuum filters, and
  • Belt filters

Soon, you'll be able to surf the web at the speed of light!

Washington, March 2 (ANI): Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created a new infrared laser made from germanium that operates at room temperature, which has made light-speed computing come one step closer to reality.

The research removes the cryogenic cooling systems previously needed for infrared lasers and could lead to powerful computer chips that operate at the speed of light.

"Using a germanium laser as a light source, you could communicate at very high data rates at very low power," said Jurgen Michel of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who developed the new germanium laser.

"Eventually, you could have the computing power of today's supercomputers inside a laptop," he said.

The creation of a new laser, even one based on germanium, is not newsworthy; more than 15,000 different lasers, some of which use germanium, have been created since the 1950s.

What makes this particular germanium laser unique is that it creates an infrared beam at room temperature.

Until now infrared germanium lasers required expensive cryogenic cooling systems to operate. The new germanium laser operates at room temperature.

To create the germanium laser, the scientists take a six-inch, silvery-gray disk of silicon and spray it with a thin film of germanium.

These same disks are actually used to produce chips in today's computers.

An electrically powered, room-temperature, infrared laser for laptop computers is still years away, however, cautioned Michel.

If and when those laptops do arrive, they will be powerful - more powerful in fact than even today's supercomputers.

The battery that powers the laptop won't necessarily last any longer, but the power it does hold will make calculations orders of magnitude faster than today.

"We need high-density, low-power solutions," said Kock.

Computer chips are constantly getting smaller and smaller, but they are approaching the fundamental limits of electron-based computing.

Light-based computing is one option to improve the speed and power of computers.

"Germanium-based optical computing is an especially attractive material for optical computing because it wouldn't require any change to the existing computer chip industry," Kock said.

The same machines that use silicon could also use germanium to make future chips. (ANI)
